Black LGBTQ Prison Outreach Program
Rainbow Serpent’s Black LGBTQ Prison Outreach Program shares artwork created by the Rainbow Serpent Collective that celebrates Black LGBTQ spiritual and cultural traditions with currently incarcerated individuals. The program is designed to foster spiritual growth, networks of solidarity, and artistic community.
We begin the conversation by sending out a letter introducing ourselves and a specially prepared packet written by our Co-Executive Directors, Marques Redd and Mikael Owunna. Grounded in their project Myth-Science of the Gatekeepers, a series of 16 glass sculptures of Black queer ancient Egyptian deities, this packet details the spiritual, emotional, and political meanings behind each of these figures. We hope these materials provide spiritual inspiration and provoke introspection. We also invite the recipient to continue a correspondence with us, and we allow the relationship to develop from there. We will continue writing and sharing other projects as long as there is interest. For those whose values and vision align with ours, we can also offer opportunities to collaborate on art projects during their incarceration in ways that might allow their voices to resonate in new communities.
If you have a loved one currently incarcerated who you think would be inspired by this program, please fill out the form below, and we will begin contact with them.
Please note: Correspondence can take up to 6 weeks to mail out of our HQ due to the volume and scope of the work. We do not take these communications lightly and take our time preparing the material and letters to maintain authenticity. Please contact us at info@therainbowserpent.org with any questions.
